We're redefining the future of legal operations through the power of AI. Our cutting-edge platform streamlines enterprise legal management, matter management, spend management and contract lifecycle processes, transforming manual workflows into intelligent, automated solutions. We’re a team of innovators using AI at the core to help legal departments become faster, smarter, and more strategic. As we continue to grow and expand the capabilities of our new AI-centric platform, we’re looking for bold thinkers and builders who are excited to shape the next chapter of legal tech. If you're energized by meaningful work, love solving complex problems, and want to help modernize how legal teams operate, we’d love to meet you.
The Software Engineer builds and maintains the features, services, and APIs that power Onit's Contracts product line within its legal operations platform, spanning enterprise legal management, matter management, spend management, and contract lifecycle management. This engineering-focused role is built on solid Ruby on Rails skills and sound software engineering practices, writing clean, tested, production-grade code. Working under the guidance of Senior Software Engineers, and alongside product managers, designers, and QA, the Software Engineer delivers well-defined features and grows technical depth in Rails and full-stack development.
Responsibilities
- • Feature & Service Development: Build, test, and maintain features, backend services, and APIs in Ruby on Rails, following established designs and standards. • Database & Queries: Write and optimise SQL queries and ActiveRecord code, and implement schema changes and data models defined with senior engineers. • Frontend Contribution: Contribute to frontend development (e.g., React) as needed, following established designs and patterns. • Quality: Implement automated tests and validation checks, and help monitor the application so issues are caught early. • Troubleshooting: Investigate, debug, and resolve application and data issues in a timely manner, escalating complex problems appropriately. • Agile Delivery & Code Reviews: Participate in sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives, and take part in code reviews to improve quality and learn from the team. • Documentation & Learning: Contribute to technical documentation and knowledge sharing, and continuously build skills in Ruby on Rails and software design.
- • 3+ years of professional software engineering experience building web applications or backend services. • Hands-on experience in Ruby on Rails (ROR), with solid understanding of object-oriented programming, testing, and clean code practices. • Working knowledge of SQL and relational database design (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or MySQL), including writing efficient queries. • Experience building or consuming REST APIs and working with common data formats (JSON, CSV). • Familiarity with automated testing (e.g., RSpec), debugging, and error handling in web applications. • Experience with Git-based workflows and CI/CD; familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and Docker. • Working proficiency with AI coding tools (e.g., Claude, Cursor) for code generation, debugging, and testing, with the judgment to review and validate AI-generated code. • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and good verbal and written communication.
- • Strong experience in ROR combined with strong database skills (SQL, data modelling, and query optimisation). • Strong experience in ROR combined with frontend development experience using React. • Candidates with strong ROR skills, average database knowledge, and frontend experience will also be considered. • Exposure to analytical or columnar data stores. • Background in enterprise B2B SaaS or the legal technology domain.
